Sunday Service, September 10

For our Sunday morning worship service on September 10, Mountain Light Unitarian Universalist Church (MLUUC) in Ellijay welcomes Dr. Barry Whittemore to be our speaker. The title of Dr. Whittemore’s sermon is “Who’s a good Christian? … I mean, really!”  Once again (as usual) there is a struggle over the soul of American Christianity.  In these turbulent times, what does it mean to be a true Christian and who is fulfilling that role?  Does one have to be a self-proclaimed Christian to do so?  The answer need not be an Osteentatious one.

Dr. Whittemore is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister having served at the Georgia Mountains Unitarian Universalist Church in Dahlonega.  He has also served congregations in Birmingham, AL, Outlaw’s Bridge Universalist church in North Carolina and Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Tennessee.  Dr. Whittemore has 27 years of teaching experience ranging from high school, community college, seminaries, the Mountain School for Congregational Leadership, and Carnegie Mellon University.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Poly Technical University, Masters’ degrees from Radford University, a Ph.D.  degree from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University.  Dr. Whittemore currently teaches Appalachian Studies at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega.  His greatest pleasure comes from traditional southern mountain Old Time music and dance.

Mountain Light, 2502 Tails Creek Road (282 West), in Ellijay is a Welcoming Congregation.  We welcome guests of all faiths, ethnicities and gender identification.  Our coffee and fellowship begins at 10 a.m., followed by the service from 10:30 to 11:30.

Religious Education is provided for children.  Children are also welcome to attend our services in the sanctuary.  For information about our 7 Unitarian Universalist Principles and our future services, please go to mluuc.org.
