Assistance needed for Afghan refugees

2021 OCT 15, Melba Gandy – As you may have heard, Sharon Watkins and I are helping Afghan refugees to get settled, acquire the things they need, and begin living in an alien world.  As many as 1,500 hundred families (out of a total of 69,000) are being resettled in Atlanta, a few at a time.  They are arriving with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.  Twenty-four more families arrived in Atlanta today.

Those who have Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status are given up to 3 months rent, a cell phone, basic food, some clothing, and a few gift cards.  Those without SIV status may get nothing other than what non-profits give them.

We are working with The Afghan-American Alliance of Georgia, Inc., a new organization formed by American-Afghan sisters, Homaira and Hogai Nassery, to provide necessities for those who need them.

Here is the “ask”:

Our families need blankets and I am collecting them.  (We have enough sheets).  Hogai’s cousin, Sara Aziza, will pick them up from me and deliver them to the families, who are temporarily housed in Clarkston, Ga.

Would you please help by donating a blanket for either a single or double bed (no queens or kings)?

Email me if you will donate a blanket and I will arrange to pick it up.

Later on as more families arrive, I will be asking for other things — diapers,  socks and shoes for children, games that children who don’t speak English can play (puzzles, jacks, etc.), clothing, feminine hygiene products, and other necessities.

THANKS A Million!
