Mountain Light Unitarian Universalist Church
Board Meeting August 14, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 12:15 pm by President Gayle Wood. Present were Gayle, Treasurer Terry Woehr, Secretary Tom Norris, Directors-at-Large Ann Low and Ed Wolpert and Communications Team Coordinator Kasey Castleberry. There was a quorum.

Minutes of the July Meeting were approved including reconciliation of the 2015-2016 receipts of $33,281 and expenses of $22,807 producing net income of $10,474.

Team Reports

Membership: Linda Kelly and Kasey Castleberry
Average Total attendance for all of July was 31.8.  Average Total attendance from JUL 10 through AUG 07 was 32.6.  (There were 57 Guests, for the celebration of Carol Johnson’s life, not factored into this number.) Detailed report is attached

Social Justice: Helen Greene
Donation to Heifer International in Carol Johnson’s name were $300. August Giving Tree will benefit school teachers and children.

Sunday Services: Bruce Wood
Speaker list is attached.

RE: Kathy Romanick and Aimee Cribbs
Kathy and Aimee appreciate the help given to the program by members and continue to require members help.

Communications Team Coordinator: Kasey Castleberry
Kasey reported on activities of his team. Details are attached. Notable is the need to increase usage of the website. A good way to lead visitors is from events on Facebook. Various potential events were discussed such as evening discussions, movie night, etc. Ed volunteered to purchase a large screen monitor and DVD player for movies. His offer was accepted.

Treasurer: Terry Woehr
Offerings for July were $3,793 and expenses were $3,044 netting $749. A $5,000 cd has been purchased at Community and Southern Bank. Terry’s report in a more detailed format is attached.Ed offered an explanation of how members and others can gain tax advantage by donating appreciated financial instruments to the Church. His paper outlining the process is attached.

MOTION
Gayle moved that the Treasurer be directed to establish an account with Community and Southern Bank to receive donations of financial instruments. Seconded by Terry and passed.

Old Business

Tails Creek Building: Ann Low
Ann has established a contact at Colliers International, the company that had the building inspected on behalf of the Marshal's Office. He told her they had heard no more from the Marshal. Ann will keep in contact trying to avoid our being surprised by listing of the building.

New Business

Telephone Line: Tom reported that in the last two months he has been responsible for monitoring incoming messages, there has been only one message. It was from a member on Sunday morning stating that his wife would not attend services.

MOTION
Ann moved that the telephone messaging service be discontinued saving $696 annually and that the Secretary be directed to discontinue the service. Seconded by Ed and passed.Kasey agreed to remove the telephone number from the mluuc.org and Tom will assure it is not on newspaper ads.

UU Camp for Youth: Terry told how the UU Camp in the Adirondacks had been meaningful for her daughter and suggested that we consider sponsoring a program utilizing The Mountain facility in North Carolina. Kasey volunteered to gather information about costs and Terry will discuss with Kathy and Aimee.

Pets at Mountain Light: Gayle
Kasey volunteered to research the writing of a contract members must sign before bringing a dog (or other pet) to church.  The contract would include having the dog on leash, owner present at all times if RE children are present and dog must not create a disturbance.  Special consideration could be given to trained therapy and service dogs.
