Sunday Service: JAN 14

On January 14 (originally scheduled for December 10), Mountain Light Unitarian Universalist Church (MLUUC) in Ellijay will welcome Sara Henderson as speaker for our Sunday morning worship service.  Her presentation title will be “Redistricting Reforms To Strengthen One Person, One Vote Democracy.”

Sara Henderson is Executive Director of Common Cause Georgia. Common Cause is the nation’s foremost non-partisan, non-profit action organization that promotes open, honest, and accountable government to strengthen our democracy.  To support that mission, Sara will explain how reforming the process for defining voting districts after each census works to ensure that districts have equal voting population, providing individual voters with equal representation.

Since the earliest stages of our democracy, legislators have put partisan politics ahead of the rights of the people by manipulating district boundaries for political advantage.  Sara will provide examples of how ordinary citizens, like us, can act at the local and state levels to reform the redistricting process.  Actions that will strengthen one person, one vote democracy support three of our seven Unitarian Universalist Principles: #1 The inherent worth and dignity of every person, #2 Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, and #5 The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.

Mountain Light, 2502 Tails Creek Road (282 West), in Ellijay is a Welcoming Congregation.  We welcome guests of all faiths, ethnicities and gender identification.  Our coffee and fellowship begins at 10 a.m., followed by the service from 10:30 to 11:30.

Religious Education is provided for children.  Children are also welcome to attend our services in the sanctuary.  For information about our 7 Unitarian Universalist Principles and our future services, please go to mluuc.org.
