August Book Club

jacobs_year-living-biblically1Our book for 2016 August is The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible. The title says it all. The biblical “dos and don’ts” include the biggies (the Ten Commandments and love thy neighbor) as well as the little ones (wearing clothes of mixed fibers and shaving your beard). The author is a secular Jew living in New York City and a writer for Esquire magazine, and does he know how to write! It’s an easy read that will give you some laughs but, also, raise some profound issues about religious literalism in Judaism, as well other religions. One reviewer refers to it as “a good book about the Good Book”. Another commented that it is “laugh-out-loud funny, and nearly always painfully honest”.

The Book Club meets at Mountain Light UUC on Saturday, August 13, at 11:00.  You are invited to attend, even if you have not read the book.  The group usually heads into Ellijay afterwards for lunch at a local eatery.  Come join the fun!
